Deep Textured Metals Shape Skin Competition Finalist

UB professors Christopher Romano, Nicholas Bruscia are finalist in a recent digital fabrication contest http://tex-fab.net/skin-results/. This UB team leads sponsored research with support from Rigidized® Metals to explore the properties of deep textured metal on structures.

From the competition web site:
The first of the clearly agreed upon entry was Project 2XmT with a great many votes and a clearly developed working model, the entry was selected without much deliberation with just a few comments, one from Randy Stratman, “from a practicality standpoint it looks like they are pretty far along. It looks like they already have a mockup. I’m a big fan of how small undulations or changing panels really have a dramatic impact from the viewing standpoint moving around the building”

Exterior Facade Sculpture in Deep Textured Stainless Steel

Like many companies we build products we are very proud of and then ship them out the door to far away places. Last year we decided to build something we could keep. An example that reflected for ourselves and our customers what are as architectural fabricators and utilizing a great raw material (Deep Textured Rigidized® Metals material). The panels are unbacked deep textured stainless steel each about 24" wide and 8" high in a ventilated rainscreen design with the curved section a strip (5WL® pattern) woven around our Rigi-Grip® tube.

Curved Base for AIA 2013 Exhibit

Each year we try to add something new to our exhibit that shows the value of deep textured metal in enhancing projects. This year we added a curved counter base featuring our 1CS pattern. This pattern's natural crinkle design contrasts well with the rectilinear cutouts (CNC punched) and the curved panels move light across the surface to create a dynamic look.
